Rikki learned to read when she was young, but now she says many kids are learning to read at a much younger age. At first Rikki didn’t really like reading, she thought it was hard, but once she got the hang of it, she read all the time. But as she got older, her life got busier and she didn’t have as much down time to read. Just recently Rikki had to start reading again for her English class, and all of the memories came back about how much she loves reading, and since then she hasn’t been able to put a book down. As said before, Rikki was young when she began to read, but she thinks she learned how to read like many other people do. First you have to learn the alphabet, and then make words and words into sentences, then you can read those sentences and finally you can read a book. Rikki believes people read for pleasure, just to enjoy a good book, something they like reading about. She thinks people may also read for entertainment or just because they have to, sometimes people read when they don’t have anything else to do, or to pass time. Rikki thinks that in order to be a good reader you just have to read. Read things you love, read things you hate, read stuff you have to, read educational things. Reading for Rikki comes very easily, and once she picks up a book that she is interested in she can’t put it down. The hardest part of reading for Rikki is when the end comes near; she knows that the book she has come to love and enjoy so much will soon be over. Rikki chooses her books sometimes by the covers, by reading the inside or the back of the book, getting an idea of what it is about. As long as Rikki has a book with her, she will read any time she has down time. Now that Rikki has started reading again, she loves it even more; she really likes reading just about anything. (Even if it is a little educational) She typically likes reading about things she can relate to, or romance.
Rikki would consider herself a writer, not because she writes all the time and enjoys it or keeps a journal or something, but because she is good at it. Again like reading she thinks she learned to write just like everyone else. Learning how to write the letters, what each letter is, how to make them into something more. Rikki thinks that people write because some things they can’t really say out loud, or because they just like to write about their day, maybe they can’t tell anyone else but that piece of paper. Just as with reading again, Rikki thinks the only way to get better at writing is to practice. Listen to your teacher in class when they tell you how to write you paper. Rikki enjoys writing factual things, like an essay or a report; she doesn’t like having to use her imagination to make up some silly story. Sometimes she doesn’t mind writing about a prompt provided by someone, but she doesn’t like coming up with her own ideas for things to write about. Her ideas for writing depend of what kind of writing she is doing. If Rikki is writing a report then she will obviously use her information that she has gathered to write about that. The only time that Rikki really writes things is for school, so if she does get to choose what she writes she enjoys writing about her day, exciting or maybe even boring things that have happened. Rikki says things that help her as a writer is feedback, what people have to say about her writing, what things she might need to change. She takes criticism into consideration to make her writing better. Rikki use to have a journal when she was younger but now that she is older she doesn’t write much, unless it is school related. Rikki feels good about the things she writes; she thinks that writing comes a little bit easier to her than others. She may not have a great vocabulary but she can go on and on about things.
